Men’s Health Q & A

As men age, their health needs can change dramatically. Midtown Primary Care Doctors offers a full range of men’s health services, including screenings and tests that can help identify hidden risk factors, as well as treatments for common and complex conditions.

What is a men's health exam?

A men’s health exam includes all the “normal” evaluations of a physical exam, as well as additional tests, screenings and evaluations aimed at health issues commonly faced by men. The purpose of a men’s health exam is to ensure preventive care is geared toward the unique health needs men encounter at different ages and stages of life.

What types of tests or health screenings should I have?

There are dozens and dozens of possible choices to help look for risk factors for specific types of diseases, and the ones that are right for your needs are based in part on your medical history, your family health history, your age and lifestyle factors and other issues. Midtown Primary Care Doctors will review all your health information to determine which ones are appropriate for you, but in general, some of the more common tests you might want to consider include:

  • cholesterol and triglyceride levels
  • colon cancer
  • prostate cancer
  • hepatitis C
  • blood glucose
  • abdominal aortic aneurysm, especially if you were ever a smoker
How often should I have a physical exam or checkup?

Ideally, you should have a checkup once a year so Midtown Primary Care Doctors can check for changes or risk factors that could indicate you might be at risk for more serious disease. By seeing the doctor every year, you create a history that makes it easier to spot changes and ensure the care and guidance you receive is based on your evolving needs.

What is low testosterone?

As men age, their levels of testosterone decrease. In some men, that can cause symptoms like low energy, low sex drive, fatigue, and weight gain. Hormone replacement therapy can help fight off those symptoms. Midtown Primary Care Doctors can help you weigh the risks and benefits of “low T” therapy to decide if it’s right for you.
